This is one of the most important historic sites in our region. Established as an army fort to keep whites from encroaching on the Indian reservation, the fort later became an Indian boarding school, then a day school, and finally a tuberculosis hospital for American Indians. Today the original headquarters building houses a really good museum (created with the cooperation of the Spokane tribe, I understand). A beautiful location as well.

These rangers are clowns. They leave you a ticket for not parking your tow rig and trailer in a designated truck and trailer parking spot, when the entire parking lot is full, including the overflow area. I parked in a field in the back of the car parking lot at 7 bags, which I've done several times when the lot is completely full, and these tool bags left a ticket on my rig. If that's the case, these lazy ass' better close the launch when it's full. Revenue Generation! That's all it is. They just hope people will just pay the ticket so they don't have to deal with it. Scammers!

Excellent place to visit even for a day trip. There is a campground nearby with a couple of walking trails leading to the fort. There is an interpretative trail with placards that have original photos and descriptions. Allow a minimum of a couple of hours to tour the museum and grounds. A short walk down the hill is a day use area with tables, BBQ's, restrooms, and a swim beach. Up the hill from the fort is a steep hiking trail that offers spectacular views of the fort, river, and surrounding area.

Cool bit of Washington state history, you should visit if you are in the area. Walk around and check out the visitor center, the old barn, and what remains of some of the other buildings. This place is a big open space and there is a decent chance of seeing a deer. Take a short hike up the bluff for a good view. There is also a park/swimming area on the river, and this place is free! Just wish more of the building were still standing from the frontier times. Oh and there is camping, but that does cost money. There are a couple small fishing docks by the campground, and I think they have a boat launch.
